Call between Biden and Putin
The call between the presidents of the United States and Ukraine will come after this Friday Biden and the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, talked for almost an hour about the escalation of tensions on the border with Ukraine.
The White House press chief, Jen Psaki, issued a statement shortly after the end of the meeting in which she made it known that President Biden had insisted on Putin on the need to “reduce tensions with Ukraine.”
“He has made it clear that the United States and its allies will respond decisively if Russia continues to invade Ukraine”, although at the same time Biden “has also expressed his support for diplomacy”, in the framework of the next meeting that will take place early of the year between Moscow and NATO.
For his part, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov said in a subsequent press conference that Biden has promised President Putin that the United States “does not plan to deploy offensive weapons in Ukraine.”
This Thursday’s talks have also served as a preamble to those scheduled for January 10-12 in Geneva, a Swiss city that already welcomed both leaders in June, when the relationship between the two powers was not going through its best moment.
The call came at the request of President Putin and is the second that both leaders have maintained after the one on December 7, in which Biden once again emphasized the United States’ commitment to the territorial integrity of Ukraine and even He threatened Russia with “unprecedented” economic sanctions if there was a hypothetical attack, something the Kremlin has denied.
