Biden’s remarks came during a rally in front of his Democratic supporters in New York City.
“Putin is not joking about the possibility of using a tactical nuclear weapon,” Biden said.
He added, “What we are experiencing is the most dangerous since the Cuban missile crisis, and the situation is like Armageddon.”
“We haven’t faced the prospect of an Apocalypse since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis,” he said.
This statement comes hours after another statement by Biden, in which he said that he does not rule out meeting Putin during the G20 summit in Indonesia.
The White House also said earlier that there are currently no indications that Russia is going to use nuclear weapons, amid its raging war with Ukraine.
Talking about nuclear is at the fore
Nuclear weapons have surfaced in Ukraine’s war in recent weeks, after Russia suffered a series of military setbacks.
The Chechen President, Ramzan Kadyrov, even called for the use of “limited nuclear weapons” in Ukraine.
But the Kremlin responded to Kadyrov, stressing that in difficult moments emotions must be excluded from assessments.
“Everything is explained in the Russian nuclear doctrine, and there can be no other considerations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Putin hinted at the possibility of using nuclear weapons to defend his country, during the announcement of partial military mobilization last September, saying that his country “will use all available means to defend itself.”
The deputy head of Russia’s National Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, was more explicit than his boss, saying that Russia had the right to defend itself with nuclear weapons if its borders were crossed.
scenarios for the use of nuclear weapons
Experts have presented several scenarios for Russia’s nuclear attack on Ukraine or the West in general, which are:
Scenario one: a parade attack
In this case, Russia could drop a nuclear weapon on an uninhabited area, such as on the Black Sea, for example, and the goal is to show that Moscow is serious about its threats and is not about joking.
The second option: a weapon of limited power
Russia could also drop a nuclear weapon of limited power on a Ukrainian military facility, in a move that could lead to hundreds and even thousands of deaths, along with heavy material losses.
The third option: a weapon with great power
In this scenario, Russia might drop a weapon with a range of 50 to 100 kilotons, three to six times more than the Hiroshima bomb.
Fourth scenario: a nuclear attack on NATO
This scenario is the least likely and even unlikely, according to the researcher, and if Russia does it, it will drop weapons on NATO targets in central European countries.
