US President Joe Biden supported the widespread belief that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expanding the war on the Gaza Strip “in order to preserve his political interests.”
In an exclusive interview with Time magazine yesterday, Biden was asked whether he believes in the validity of Israeli insinuations that indicate that Netanyahu is prolonging the war for the sake of his political reconciliation. He replied: “There are good reasons for people to reach this conclusion.”
Biden referred to the political challenges that Netanyahu faced before the start of the war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, regarding changing the constitution and imposing judicial reforms.
He added: “This is an internal discussion that has no results, and it is difficult to say whether Netanyahu will change his position or not” regarding these reforms.
Regarding the Gaza war, Biden said that his main disagreement with Netanyahu is over “what will happen after the end of the Gaza war, and will Israeli forces return to the Strip?”
He explained that he spoke with officials in the region about this, saying: “If the matter is the return of Israeli forces to the Gaza Strip, this cannot succeed,” stressing the necessity of “moving to the two-state solution.”
