Washington believes that it is not the right time to talk about Ukraine’s accession to NATO now. This was announced on Friday, September 30, by Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Jake Sullivan.
Accordingly, he commented on the journalist’s question regarding the White House’s reaction to the application for an accelerated entry of Ukraine into the alliance, submitted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to NATO.
“Now, in our opinion, the best way to support Ukraine is practical support “on the ground,” Sullivan said.
Meanwhile, he noted that the United States does not refuse to support the policy of “open doors” for NATO.
U.S. officials told Politico that Ukraine’s announcement that it is seeking an accelerated entry into NATO came as a surprise to the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden. Also, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, shared with the publication that she refuses to directly support the relevant initiative of Kyiv.
In addition, the audience of the British newspaper Daily Mail reacted sharply to Zelensky’s application. One of the commentators said that it would be foolish to accept Ukraine into the alliance.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region due to increased shelling by Ukrainian troops.
