Fans of Better Call Saul they will remember well that last season was at risk of cancellation after the star of the series Bob Odenkirk suffered a heart attack on set, the series has since been suspended from production pending the final episodes that would arrive in July.
In a recent interview with the co-creator of the series Peter Gould revealed that the possibility of canceling the entire sixth season in full had been considered Odenkirk had not recovered adequately, or worse still if things had turned out worse for him.
There is no backup plan if your lead actor has a heart attack. It’s impossible and reminds you that as important as entertainment may seem, it’s not. When someone you care about collapses in front of everyone, it changes your view of things. The miracle was that Bob recovered in five weeks, and he hasn’t changed one iota. However, if things had turned out differently, we would have canceled everything.
This is what Gould said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Gould also revealed that in the aftermath ofOdenkirk infarction production was interrupted, also to give everyone the opportunity to metabolize what happened. Everyone recovered fairly quickly from the shock, and resumed shooting scenes that did not involve the presence of the character of Odenkirk.
When we heard he was coming back, we didn’t know what his physical condition would be. I wasn’t there the day he had a heart attack, but I was there when he came back and there was a lot of emotion seeing him again, but also nervousness. Should we be careful not to shake it too much? I remember when he was still in the hospital he would call me to ask me about the scripts, while his wife Naomi in the background was annoyed.
We in the editorial team can only be happy with how things went, and we wish the best to Bob Odenkirk both for what concerns his work, and above all for his state of health. We just have to wait for the new season of Better Call Saul on Netflix, after fortunately having overcome the risk of its cancellation.
