He said that the modality abuses the most vulnerable people and did not answer whether it is unconstitutional
The president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), minister Cármen Lúcia, said on Monday (September 30, 2024) that she thinks “dangerous” the advancement of sports betting in society. She assessed that bets abuse the most vulnerable to profit and declared that she was personally against the practice.
“I think all types of gambling end up betting that someone, somewhere, is a ‘sucker’ and that’s why we can take advantage of them. It is the abuse of one human being by another, especially targeting the most vulnerable […] I’m really against that kind of thing”, he declared in an interview with the program “Roda Viva” from the TV Cultura.
A BC (Central Bank) study on betting stated last week that bookmakers received R$3 billion from Bolsa Família beneficiaries in August 2024. The survey, however, leaves doubts about whether this actually happened or whether there was some kind of fraud. Understand more in this report.
The minister, who is also a member of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), was unable to say whether there are signs of unconstitutionality in the law that seeks to regulate betting, approved in Congress and sanctioned by the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). She joked that, even if she knew, she wouldn’t speak out either so as not to put the possibility of reporting this type of action in doubt if the law reaches the Court and falls into her hands.
Cármen Lúcia also avoided criticizing the government’s opinion regarding the legislation, as she does not know how the Lula government’s assessment of the issue was made. On Monday, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad announced that hundreds of illegal websites will have their domains suspended.
The president of the TSE reiterated that electoral legislation already prohibits the holding of draws or the offering of goods and that the Court’s resolution that banned betting on election results was a “reminder” to electoral judges.
