Bernie Sanders (New York, 1941) is a regular protagonist of social networks. This Wednesday, the senator from Vermont has won the affection of thousands of users on social networks due to the clothes he wore for the inauguration ceremony of Joe Biden. In contrast to long coats and the ties of other Democratic politicians invited to the president’s inauguration, Sanders wore a gray casual jacket and oversized knit gloves.
An image of the senator, almost curled up in a chair in the middle of the Capitol Hill bleachers taken by the photographer Brendan Smialowski for the agency Getty Images it was quickly taken up by internet users. “Here waiting in the cold to be served my atole”, were some of the phrases that accompanied the image. Others cut out the silhouette of Sanders and placed it in a large number of settings: an IMSS waiting room, at a candy stand, traveling on the Metro or in a meeting with The Avengers.
The story of that jacket was shared by the senator’s wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders. It is a garment made by the Vermont-based sportswear brand Burton Snowboards. “Our son Dave worked with Burton Snowboards founder Jake Burton on a limited edition jacket with Bernie Sanders’ face on the back,” he says. “Bernie really liked it, so Dave bought him one, without his image, for Christmas,” says O’Meara. The firm unveiled the model used by Sanders, with a cost of 132 dollars (about 2,600 Mexican pesos), which it is currently sold out.
Sanders usually has a particular style when it comes to winter clothing. The senator wore a similar garment that was used in another meme, but from December 2019. On his social networks, the senator and then candidate for the presidency for the Democratic Party released a video to raise funds. “I am once again asking for your financial support” (Once again, I ask for your financial support). The image of Sanders was taken up in various end-of-the-year memes, such as when asking for money after wasting everything at Christmas.
They say the best things in life are priceless, like Sanders’ big gloves. According to journalist Ruby Cramer, they were a gift from Jen Ellis, a teacher at Essex Junction in Vermont. “She gave them to him over 2 years ago and she was surprised when she started using them in the campaign,” he told on Twitter. They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with a material made from recycled plastic bottles.
The politician has been amused by the phenomenon of his image on social networks. In an interview with CBS, Sanders took it with a sense of humor. “In Vermont we know something about the cold,” he told reporter Gayle King. “We are not so concerned with fashion, we just want to keep warm. And that is what I have done today ”. On his Instagram account, Sanders has taken up this interview to promote an initiative to give support of $ 2,000 to Americans unemployed by the pandemic. “Fashion? Let’s get to work,” he said.
Away from politics and Sanders’ agenda, social media has taken the senator to laughs. The social media accounts of institutions such as Phillips Museum or personalities like the actress Zoe saldana they are just a sample of the importance of the image of Sanders. Whether you’re patiently waiting for the galleries to open, whether it’s a display of how to wear the mask, or as part of epic film and art scenes. Bernie Sanders has earned the love and attention of social media.
