The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, traveled this week for the second time this year to the United States to carry out a tour in which he will meet with investors, senior officials and to participate in the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN). ). Arévalo left the country on Sunday and began his work on Monday in New York with a meeting with Achim Steiner, administrator of the United Nations Program, participated in an event with businessmen and held a meeting with António Guterres, secretary general of the UN, who He reiterated his support for the president. Then he gave his speech at the UN headquarters, in which he emphasized the importance of multilateralism to address social problems. During his speech he took the opportunity to list some of his achievements.
“In Guatemala we are making tremendous efforts to combat corruption. To date, my Government has filed more than 84 complaints of grand corruption with the prosecutor’s office. “We have eliminated more than 1,300 positions in the public service that were part of will-buying and clientelism mechanisms,” he said. “We are convinced that our fight [contra la corrupción] It is more effective when we do it in solidarity with other nations, as history has already shown us,” added the president.
The tour includes a meeting with Guatemalan migrants living in the United States and will conclude on Tuesday, with a meeting with the president of the Institute of International Peace.
Arévalo traveled accompanied by a delegation of 10 Guatemalan officials, including those in charge of the Finance and Economy portfolios, with the aim of strengthening the support and cooperation that Joe Biden’s government has offered to Guatemala after Arévalo’s victory on last year and his inauguration last January.
Since Arévalo assumed the presidency, the international community has expressed its intention to collaborate more with that country. This week, the Queen of Spain, Letizia Ortiz, will meet with the Guatemalan first lady, Lucrecia Peinado, and will visit some cooperation programs that the European country has in Guatemala.
