British actor Bernard Hill, known for his roles in Titanic and The Lord of the ringsdied this Sunday morning at the age of 79, his agent has confirmed to the BBC. Hill played Captain Edward John Smith in 1997 Titanic, James Cameron’s film starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, which has become one of the highest-grossing films in film history. Years later, she worked for Peter Jackson in another of the most successful film sagas in history, The Lord of the rings, giving life to King Théoden in the second and third installments of the trilogy of adaptations of JRR Tolkien’s novels. They are two of the three films with the most Oscars in history, with 11 awards each, which makes them have a curious record.
In addition to Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), the British actor participated in his 40-year career in another production that won the Oscar for best film: Gandhi (1982), alongside Ben Kingsley. Hill appeared in a small role in the remembered I, Claudio, before rising to fame in 1979 with The Black Stuff, playing Yosser Hughes, a working-class man in crisis during the Thatcher era. He returned to it shortly after for the series Boys from the Blackstuff. The catchphrases of her character became popular among critics of the Iron Lady’s political management.
Hill also participated in Spanish cinema, releasing in 2007 The heart of the earth, a historical epic set in the mines of Riotinto (Huelva), in the turbulent Spain of María Cristina’s regency. It was directed by Antonio Cuadri and had an international cast, led by the British along with the Colombian Catalina Sandino Moreno, the Portuguese Joaquim de Almeida, the Cuban Jorge Perugorría and the Spanish Ana Fernández. Born in Manchester in 1944, the actor grew up in a Catholic family of miners.
His latest work, the second season of the television series The Responderacclaimed police drama starring Martin Freeman (sherlock, The Hobbit), is yet to be released. In the United Kingdom it will do so precisely this Sunday. It is not unusual in the career of an actor that he has appeared in all types of recognized productions in both film and television, from the series Wolf Hallwhich is about to return and where he played the Duke of Norfolk, Anne Boleyn’s uncle, until The scorpion king (2002), going through the adaptation of The dream of a nigth of summer (1999), by William Shakespeare, Imminent execution (1999), directed by Clint Eastwood, or Valkyrie (2008), by Bryan Singer.
