Ajax won the away match against Panathinaikos in the third preliminary round of the Europa League (0-1). Steven Berghuis scored the only goal in the Olympic stadium in Athens. He scored in the 28th minute, after a fluid combination with Devyne Rensch and Kian Fitz-Jim.
Ajax then faltered, but held on, partly due to a good game by goalkeeper Remko Pasveer. Daniel Mancini scored for the Greeks, but was whistled back for offside. Alexander Jeremejeff also had a seemingly unmissable chance one-on-one with Pasveer, but he shot just wide.
Ajax and Panathinaikos will meet next week for the return match in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The winner of the two-legged match will qualify for the play-offs for a place in the main tournament of the Europa League. (ANP)
