Yesterday the Ballon d’Or award was awarded to the best player of 2021 and many understand that the one who deserved it was Benzema. The truth is that in my opinion it is one of the most complicated years to choose a winner, but Messi’s victory with his team, in my opinion ends up breaking the balance in favor of the Argentine.
What I do think is unfair for the Frenchman is that he was not even on the podium of the three best players of the year, and was fourth. I think Benzema could perfectly be considered the third or second best player this year, due to his level of play. It is true that he has not been the player who has scored the most goals, nor the one who has won the most titles, but the truth is that he fought La Liga until the last match, reached the semifinals of the Champions League and was transcendental in the conquest of the Nations League with your selection.
Without a doubt, all this should have helped Benzema rise a few positions higher in the votes for the best player. In recent years, goals and collective titles have been much more valued over performance on the field. The best player on a team is not always the one who scores the most goals, and the best player is not always the one who wins the most titles, since soccer is a team sport and players depend on a team to win trophies.
Therefore, although I believe that Messi is the just winner of the Ballon d’Or, we could perfectly consider Benzema as the second best player, with Lewandowski’s permission. In my opinion, the Pole should have won it in 2020, but when the gala was not held, he lost a golden opportunity to win the award that every footballer wants.
