Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will hold talks on a Russian special operation in the Donbass in the coming hours. The agency reported DPA with reference to sources in the German government.
As the TASS agency clarifies, the meeting will take place on the evening of Saturday, March 5 (the night of March 6 Moscow time) in Berlin.
“I can confirm that tonight (March 5) Chancellor Scholz will receive Prime Minister Bennett at the Office of the Federal Chancellor,” the agency quoted a source in the German cabinet as saying.
Earlier Saturday, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian leader, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett discussed the situation in Ukraine in Moscow. The Kremlin spokesman added that a statement to the media following the talks is not planned.
The leaders last contacted on March 2. Then, during a telephone conversation with Bennett, the Russian leader outlined Moscow’s position regarding the conditions for resolving the conflict in Ukraine, pointing out the need to demilitarize and denazify the neighboring country.
Bennett, in turn, expressed some considerations in this regard, taking into account his recent contacts with the leaders of a number of states, the Kremlin said.
On the same day, Scholz said that Germany and Israel were in favor of a diplomatic settlement of the conflict over Ukraine. They consider it necessary to continue negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.
Against the background of a significant aggravation of the situation in the Donbass as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military, the Donetsk and Luhansk republics announced the evacuation of the civilian population to the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a corresponding decree. On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. As the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov clarified, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
