David Benavidez showed that his power is still intact by proclaiming himself the new interim Light Heavyweight champion of the World Boxing Council by defeating the Ukrainian Olekdandr Gvozdyk in a clear unanimous decision at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
After 12 rounds, the judges saw David win 116-112, 117-111 and 119-109.
Benavidez came out with everything from the first bell. He landed good hooks and constantly attacked the opponent’s soft areas.
The European looked slow, could not stop Benavidez’s speed, and ended up suffering his second defeat as a professional.
Now, David passed his foray to 175 pounds with a good grade, and wants to challenge the Russians Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev, who were going to face each other this month, but could not due to an injury that Artur suffered.
But just because he went up to the Light Heavyweights, he didn’t forget the fight against Saúl Álvarez. Benavidez insists that he was able to beat “Canelo”, and that the only thing missing is for the Mexican to agree to face him, since the “Monster” is still the official challenger of the Guadalajara.
The 27-year-old Californian fighter remains undefeated professionally, and with this victory over the Ukrainian Gvozdyk he left his record at 29-0.
