The pandemic wreaked all kinds of havoc on the entertainment industry, with cinema in particular being one of the hardest hit. The closure of theaters around the world caused a lot of movies to be delayed, while some others debuted exclusively in streaming. Marvel even changed their strategy of simultaneous releases because of this, and according to Ben Affleck, in the future the cinemas will only be for the big productions of the MCU and other important tapes.
As part of a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Affleck stated the following:
“I have to say, when The Way Back came out, it was released a week before theaters closed. But even before that I knew that a film about loss, the death of a child and alcoholism was not going to attract people to the cinema. We were talking about Narcos: Mexico, Succession, Mare of Easttown. They are amazing streaming productions.
If I had to bet, I would say that a drama like Argo would no longer be in theaters today. And that wasn’t that long ago. It would be a limited series. I think movie theaters will become much more expensive and exclusive venues for certain events. They’re probably going to be more youth oriented, and people who say, ‘Yeah, I enjoy the Marvel Universe, I can’t wait to see what comes next.’ And we’ll have like 40 movies a year in theaters, all from well-known franchises, or sequels, or animated productions.”
Even if Affleck He admitted that it took him a while to accept this idea, his latest project finally opening his eyes. The Last Duel, for ridley scott, it only grossed $30.6 million at the US box office.
“The Last Duel really broke me. I’ve had bad movies before but I never cared. I knew why people hadn’t come, because they weren’t good. But I liked what we did in The Last Duel, I liked my lines. I’m very proud of her. So I got confused. And then I realized that he did very well on streaming and I thought, ‘There you have it. That’s where our audience is.’”
And speaking of Affleck and the movies of Marvel, it was recently revealed that the actor could reprise his role as Daredevil in Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and here you can read the details about it.
Publisher’s note: Affleck certainly has a point, although I think to say that theaters will be exclusive to Marvel or major productions is perhaps a bit far-fetched. Yes, there are movies that work better in streaming, but nothing compares to the experience of going to the cinema physically.
