The hosts, decimated by Covid, took the field with only 9 players. On the result of 0-7 the match was interrupted
Decimated by a Covid outbreak, Belenenses – third last in the Portuguese Liga – were forced to take the field in 9 against Benfica. As many as 14 positive to the buffer, plus the technician: to replace the teammates, many boys from the under 23 and even two goalkeepers were deployed, as outfield players.

On the pitch, inevitably, there was no match. The first half ended at 0-7. After half-time two other players remained in the locker room, and a few minutes later an injury left the hosts in six. The regulation provides that each team must have at least 7 players on the field: the match was therefore suspended at 48 minutes. The Belenenses midfielder Afonso Sousa, when he learned that the match was going to be played, commented on twitter: “Shameful” . Without other words, and not just him.
