Athlete Kristina Timanovskaya, whom the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus wanted to forcibly deport from Tokyo, decided to ask for asylum. It is reported by TASS citing Japanese media.
It is specified that Timanovskaya is now being transported to a safe place.
Earlier on August 1, it became known that the NOC removed the athlete from the application for the competition. Thus, Timanovskaya was excluded from the national team on the eve of the race. After that, the Sports Solidarity Fund accused the Belarusian national team of forcibly deporting the athlete from Tokyo, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) demanded an explanation from Minsk.
Timanovskaya criticized the sports leadership after she was promptly included in the team for the relay. In the official statement of the NOC, the decision to exclude the athlete from the national team is associated with the emotional and psychological state of Timanovskaya.
