Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said on Tuesday (16) that he wants to prevent the migration crisis on the Polish border from resulting in clashes with neighboring European countries.
“The essential thing now is to defend our country, our people and avoid confrontations,” he told the state agency Belta.
“This issue should not turn into a heated confrontation,” he added.
Without revealing details or concrete elements, Lukashenko said he had received reports of “attempts to transport weapons to the migrant camp” located on the border with Poland.
According to Minsk, more than 2,000 migrants trying to enter the European Union (EU) through Poland are camped outside the Bruzgi border post.
Poland mobilized the military and police to prevent the entry of migrants.
“I don’t understand why they mobilized planes, helicopters and tanks against the refugees,” Lukashenko said, before claiming that Poland had resorted to “20,000 soldiers, as well as planes and tanks” at the border.
“Instead of seeking a solution with the Polish side, the European Union ends cross-border cooperation projects,” said Lukashenko.
“Furthermore, they threaten us with new sanctions, with the construction of a five-meter high wall,” he added.
“If they don’t have anything to do, let them build it, we have nothing against it”, joked the president of Belarus.
The EU accuses Minsk of orchestrating the current crisis as a form of revenge for sanctions decided in retaliation for unprecedented internal political repression.
Member states said on Monday that they would adopt new sanctions against the Belarusian government.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke with Lukashenko about the issue, which represents a victory for the Belarusian president, whose re-election in August 2020 was not recognized by the EU.
