He also stressed that the Belarusian military personnel perform tasks exclusively on the territory of the republic, none of them are in Ukraine.
Earlier in the day, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced that the republic’s air defense systems were on alert to prevent “stabs in the back” of Russian troops. At the same time, the Belarusian leader stressed that the country does not plan to take part in Russia’s special operation to protect Donbass.
The day before, negotiations between Russia and Ukraine were held in the Gomel region of Belarus. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that following the results of the meeting, “there is no result yet” that I would like to receive. He noted that Moscow had voiced its positions, Kyiv put forward counter points and received “some signals.”
On February 28, Russian leader Vladimir Putin, during a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, said that in order to stabilize the situation in Ukraine, the denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine, as well as Kiev’s confirmation of its neutral status and recognition of Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea, are necessary.
On February 24, the Russian Federation launched an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. The Ukrainian authorities accused the Russian Federation of hitting its military infrastructure, martial law was introduced throughout the country. Kyiv also severed diplomatic relations with Moscow and recalled its diplomats from the embassy.
Before that, on February 21, Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the DNR and LNR, as well as treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the republics. The documents were ratified the next day.
The head of state made the relevant decisions against the backdrop of the aggravation of the situation in Donbass that began on February 17. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
