How to deal with parenting today? And why does it seem more complex than it used to be? What do parents ask to feel supported? To these and others tomorrow answers the guide “Being a parent today”, which comes out on the occasion of the World Children’s Rights Day, which is celebrated on November 20: a synergistic work, carried out with the unconditional contribution of the Italian Society of Preventive and Social Pediatrics (Sipps) and Nestlé. Between rules and common sense, between emotions and fears, the guide is a valid support to face parenthood with awareness and serenity. An issue not taken for granted if already in 2014 the European Union, with the project “Early Childhood Education and Care (Ecec)”, emphasized the need for support parents in interpreting their educational role.
“Knowing the conditions in which the parenting experience takes place is today a question of great social impact that calls parents and family members, health professionals, companies and policy makers to team up on the topic of parenting”, he comments in a note Giuseppe di Mauro, president of Sipps. The Scientific Society “has always supported the path and developed, pioneeringly, skills and experiences regarding these issues – he remembers – also with numerous initiatives. Today parenting is no longer considered as a normal and inevitable event in the life cycle but as a conscious choice also dictated by the social context, a dynamic process, which adapts to its own changes, those of its children and natural events and which continuously remodels itself over time “.
The guide is part of the Nestlé Parenting Initiative international program, which wants to help parents around the world to raise healthier and happier children. This new guide is a concrete response to the data that emerged from the research ‘The Parenting Index’, commissioned by Nestlé to Kantar on a sample of 8,000 new parents of children under one year of age from 16 countries around the world to reflect on the parenting experience on the international scene and to identify the needs, feelings and experiences that characterize the beginning of the parenting process.
“When a child is born, a parent is born too. We believe that all mothers and fathers should feel informed, respected and supported in the choices they make, for themselves and their children, and these guidelines go in this direction. They are the first step on a path that intends to lead Nestlé to become a constant support for parents, beyond nutrition “, says Manuela Kron, Head of Corporate Affairs & Marketing Consumer Communication Nestlé Group in Italy.
The data from the research ‘The Parenting Index’ – reads the note – found that, regardless of the area of the world in which the children are raised, there are 8 common factors that impact parents, influencing their ability to manage their role with serenity: psychological pressure; financial resilience; supports for life and work; perception of having a child that is easy to manage; access to health and wellness services and resources; social development that supports parenting and childhood; sharing parenting and trust; parental satisfaction and resilience.
It is precisely to respond to these factors that Sipps joined the project and carried out with Nestlé the guide can be downloaded for free from the site of Nestlé Italy and from the site of Sipps. Among the topics addressed in the guide: a mother was born, a father was born, safeguarding the couple, how to manage brothers / sisters, educational styles, time management, reconciliation between work and family life. On this last point, there are numerous initiatives promoted by Nestlé to respond to the renewed needs of new mothers and fathers, to better support them in such an important moment.
