D.he AfD members of the Bundestag Uwe Witt and Johannes Huber have announced their exit from the party and the parliamentary group. Witt, who was considered to be a representative of the moderate current in the party, justified his step with “crossing borders” by AfD members. The MP from Schleswig-Holstein intends to continue exercising his mandate. Huber announced his departure at the turn of the year.
In a letter to the AfD federal office and the state office of the party in Kiel, which is available to the German Press Agency, Witt continued that he had always publicly articulated “clear positions in relation to party-internal processes”. In addition, he pointed out that he would take action if “these named transgressions within the party should reach the parliamentary group or the federal executive committee does not show a clear edge when party members transgress boundaries”. Witt said on request that he would comment publicly in mid-January.
Huber, who sits in the Bundestag for the Freising constituency, announced his move in an internal Telegram message, which the dpa has also received. He confirmed his exit to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”: He wanted to make a “clear cut”, he explained – with reference to a controversial Telegram post recently. In the internal declaration of resignation, Huber wrote, without being more specific: “In general, attention should not be on temporary diversionary maneuvers such as published Telegram comments, but on the essentials.”
Both belonged to the Bundestag in the previous electoral term. Witt is a member of the Labor and Social Affairs Committee, Huber is a member of the Petitions and Family Committees.
The AfD co-group chairman Tino Chrupalla called on both of them to renounce their mandate: “I regret your decision, but I would have expected that you would give back your mandates, which you acquired through the party, in order to give successors the opportunity to strengthen the group to preserve the AfD in the Bundestag, ”he told the“ Spiegel ”.
