Is the corona pandemic exacerbating the problem?
Unfortunately, that is to be expected. If parents lack resources or simply lack time, as is the case with single parents, children in this pandemic can automatically suffer disadvantages. I assume that we will probably deteriorate again in terms of educational equity in the next Pisa study.
Do you already know how the school closings will affect?
As a result, children in particular from poorly educated households are falling behind. This can be deduced from studies of previous teachers’ strikes in other countries. A first study from Belgium already shows that the school closings in the spring, which were roughly comparable to the situation in Germany, significantly reduced the children’s skills and also worsened the inequality of educational opportunities.
What would have to happen to better promote the disadvantaged?
The support offers should reach the children and adolescents where there are the greatest problems. As far as such targeted offers are concerned, a lot has happened recently, especially in early childhood, for example through family centers or language training and the extension of educational times. The next steps are now necessary in elementary schools.
Even though there are many more all-day schools than before?
The further expansion of all-day primary schools is important and right. The primary schools should be developed into family centers that also involve parents more closely. The afternoon care could be qualitatively improved and used more for individual support. It is also helpful to strengthen multi-professional teams in schools, i.e. with more experts in IT, psychology and social work.
Whoever is at a disadvantage always remains at a disadvantage?
There are also positive developments! The proportion of students from non-academic households has increased. The vocational training offers very good prospects. Educational poverty among young adults fell until a few years ago. If no more is done, there is a risk that the proportion of students with no qualifications will increase again.
