SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The Central Bank authorized Ame Digital, a fintech that belongs to retailer Americanas, to operate as a payment institution in the modalities of e-money issuer and acquirer, according to an order in the Official Gazette on Thursday.
An e-money issuer, according to the BC, operates in the management of a prepaid payment account, in which funds must be deposited in advance, like issuers of prepaid cards in national currency.
An acquirer enables commercial establishments to accept a payment instrument, as defined by the financial authority. An example is the suppliers of machines for receiving cards by shopkeepers.
In mid-August, Americanas announced its first change of command in two decades, with the arrival of Sergio Rial, former CEO of Santander Brasil, starting in early 2023. The market reaction was positive, especially in light of expectations regarding his management’s potential plans for Ame.
The order came from the Central Bank’s Financial System Organization Department.
