Roberto Bautista was about to give Spanish tennis the third great joy of the day at the US Open after Garbiñe Muguruza’s meritorious triumphs against Victoria Azarenka and, above all, Carlos Alcaraz against Stefanos Tsitsipas. But on a great day for the youth in the tournament, the Castellón-born player was halfway back. He lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime 2-0 and broke down in the third set when he came up to force the fifth, although the 21-year-old Canadian, whom Toni Nadal advises in New York, endured and will be the one who plays the round of 16 after winning by 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 and 6-3 at 3:55. His rival will be Andrey Rublev or Frances Tiafoe.
A shame for Roberto, who closes the Grand Slams season with discreet results for his category: first round in Australia, second at Roland Garros, eighth at Wimbledon and third round in New York. On the bright side, he may return to the top-20 on Monday the 13th and he still has tournaments left to try and win a title this year, in addition to the Davis Cup. Auger-Aliassime once again surpasses Rober, as he did last year in Cologne and now dominates the head-to-head 2-1.
Roberto had a chance of victory until the end, when in the seventh game of the last heat he had three break opportunities to equal the one his rival had endorsed him. They escaped him and although he pressed with a 0-30 in the final 6-3, Felix had enough skill and personality to solve the situation with three direct aces of the 27 that he placed for a total of 77! winning shots. Thus, he cared little for making 74 unforced errors against one of the most consistent tennis players on the circuit from the back of the court.
