The evacuation of residents from Donetsk was officially stopped, but people are trying to move deeper into the city because of the shelling. This was stated on Sunday, March 6, by the representative of the People’s Militia of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Eduard Basurin.
“The evacuation was officially <…> stopped. But the people who live in the Petrovsky, Kirovsky, Kievsky, Kuybashevsky districts, they are now trying to move either to the center or to the depths (of the city),” Basurin said on the air of the TV channel “Russia 24“.
According to him, the Ukrainian side refused to guarantee the regime of silence in Mariupol and Volnovakha.
Earlier that day, it became known that the Donetsk People’s Republic had evacuated more than 300 people from Mariupol and its suburbs to the Novoazovsky district. On the same day, the head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, announced that the offensive operation on Mariupol was continuing, the ring around it was narrowing.
Also on Sunday, the official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Konashenkov, said that the People’s Militia of the DPR is conducting successful offensive operations on the outskirts of Mariupol, and the Stary Krym residential area has been taken under control.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17. In the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces was reported, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization, the evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia, and also asked to recognize their independence. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing their sovereignty.
On February 24, the President of Russia announced an operation to protect the civilian population in the Donbass. It pursues several goals – the protection of the civilian population of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to the press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov, the last two aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people. At the same time, on March 6, a representative of one of the competent Russian departments said that Ukraine could soon get its own nuclear weapons.
