Enea Bastianini had climbed up to a decided position after an imperious start to the race from the fifteenth pitch on the grid. It seemed that a day of glory had come for the 23-year-old from Rimini to gather some satisfaction this season and, instead, shortly after the conclusion of lap 6 he was seen cursing in the Avintia garage for a premature retirement …
“We had a great pace and I felt good on the bike. I was losing a bit from the others in the corners but under braking and accelerating we were fine, which would have been good in the final race. Unfortunately the hull opened and my race ended there. It literally exploded and I couldn’t do anything but go back to the pits because the bike wasn’t working. Let’s say it was a two year old hull… ”.
Enea let off his disappointment and laughs bitterly after the joke, but this unexpected stop interrupted a performance that could have given much other emotions. The fairing tore off the frame at full speed and was “shot” up before ending up towards the outside of the track.
It could have been a really dangerous situation: his Ducati Desmosedici showed itself in a naked version with the bodywork on the left side that literally tore off the bike as if it suddenly collapsed, although there were no contacts to determine the break.
Was there a mechanical failure or a human error?
“I think there was no human error because the fixing screws were all there, but we still don’t have the precise answers because the team is evaluating what actually happened. What we regret is that it ended badly because we didn’t deserve it ”.
With the splash of water, would you have continued with the slicks, giving depth to the character of a fighter or would you have preferred the bike change to switch to the rain?
“I have to tell you the truth: I was too nervous about what happened that I didn’t watch the race: I just followed the last lap to understand what would have happened and who would have won, but I can’t tell you what I would have done and you I confess that I would have loved to find out. After all, the rookies expressed themselves well, just look at what Luca did. It is a pity not to have been in the fray ”.
You lined up that had begun to drain: what track conditions did you find?
“They weren’t bad: a few drops of water were falling, but the asphalt was completely dry. I felt good and then as I said with the heat we always manage to do a little more than the others ”.
