France, Bardella against Mbappé and Thuram: “Morality lessons from millionaires”
“I have a lot of respect for our players, be they Marcus Thuram or Kylian Mbappe, who are football icons and youth icons. But we must respect the French, we must respect everyone’s vote”, the words of Jordan Bardella, leader of the Rassemblement National,
Marine Le Pen’s right-hand man commented on the statements of the two France attackers, who in recent hours had launched an appeal to young people to vote against the “extremes” in the elections. “When someone is a millionaire and is lucky enough to travel around on a private plane, it bothers me a bit that he then gives lessons to people who earn 1,400 euros and don’t make it to the end of the month, who aren’t lucky enough to live in over-protected neighborhoods. It’s a bit of a shame and I’m not sure these moral lessons are appreciated.”
Even the president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, made it clear that he did not appreciate the ‘political’ exits of the two champions of the French national team (committed to Euro 2024). «I have always said that I guarantee them freedom of expression, but the association principles of the Federation imply that players avoid political and religious debates and guarantee a principle of neutrality». Some players, Diallo added, “went further in their positions.” And again: «The institution cannot have the same freedom of speech as its players. The French team belongs to all the French, I don’t want it to be exploited.”
