(Reuters) – Defender Ronald Araújo of Uruguay and Barcelona suffered a muscle injury that will prevent him from playing in the World Cup qualifier against Brazil on Thursday, reported the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) ) this Tuesday.
The 22-year-old defender was substituted in the second half of the 3-0 loss to Argentina and complained of thigh pain. A test on Monday revealed a hamstring problem.
Uruguay occupy the fourth and final automatic spot for the World Cup – one point ahead of Colombia – with seven rounds to go.
Araújo will return to his club, Barcelona, where he will be assessed before a series of crucial matches that include Spanish league clashes against Valencia and Real Madrid, as well as a Champions League group stage game against Dynamo Kiev .
Araújo’s embezzlement would be a setback for Barcelona, which is in a bad phase this season under the command of Ronald Koeman, ninth in LaLiga and last in the Champions League group without scoring.
