In the Caribbean the island nation of Barbados has left its colonial era behind today. The country severed ties with Britain for centuries, leaving behind the queen of its former ruler Elizabeth and declared itself the freshest republic in the world.

The flag representing the Queen’s power was lowered in the capital of the island nation, Bridgetown, in the morning Finnish time. In the same ceremony, the country’s first president was sworn in Sandra Mason.

Barbados became independent from Britain in 1966, but the country’s ruler had hitherto been the British head of state, Queen Elizabeth.

Barbados, with a population of more than 280,000, is known as the birthplace of singer star Rihanna, among others.
