The Justice of Bangladesh issued this Thursday an arrest warrant against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The president resigned last August amid a strong wave of protests and fled to India for alleged crimes against humanity in relation to the high number of deaths during the summer student demonstrations.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ITC) of Bangladesh, in charge of the case against Hasina and other senior government officials, has issued this order along with those of 45 other senior officials – some of them members of the Awami League party – allegedly involved in these crimes.
The president of the court, Golam Mortuza Majumdar, has issued the orders at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office and has indicated that all of them They must appear before Justice before November 18an issue that is complicated in the case of Hasina, who remains in the neighboring country and has indicated that she would only return when elections are called.
The former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Hasan Mahmud and Anisul Huq are among the 46 detained, as court sources have clarified to different British media.
With this measure, the court seeks to speed up trials against senior officials for crimes against humanity and “genocide” committed during the riots, which began in July with a series of protests against the quota law for access to public employment. An estimated 750 people died during the protests and thousands were injured.
At the moment, the Asian country’s Justice has processed more than 60 complaints against Hasina and a large number of members of her party, so the The Prosecutor’s Office is already investigating many of them.
Hasina’s Awami League has been one of the main ones accused of violence of those weeks after hundreds of his supporters took to the streets to confront the young students who led the protests.
On August 5, he fled to India, coinciding with one of the bloodiest days of the protests. Although most of the accusations are for murders of specific protesters, cases have also been brought against her for crimes such as kidnappings.
