Arnaud MüllerCOO of Bandai Namco Europebelieves that this current reality of continuous acquisitions and mergers is creating additional problems for smaller publishers and making it difficult to work with some intellectual properties.
Bandai Namco is known as a producer and publisher of his own games (Tekken, Tales of, Scarlet Nexus, Code Vein, Pac-Man and many others), but he is also known for having signed agreements with external studios to modify his games, with Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series which are some of the most high-profile mainstream examples. However, relationships with outside firms are starting to have problems with so many acquisitions taking place.
“What I think is that we need to protect the properties we create with the studios we collaborate with“Müller told GI.biz in a recent interview.”When we invest in the creation of an IP, when we invest in the promotion of these properties, we must also take into account the fact that we must guarantee some kind of security about the future of the studio that develops the IP, if this does not belong to us. So that’s something we’re working on. All of these acquisitions we’re seeing are impacting smaller publishers’ ability to access the best studios in the world. But we at Bandai Namco have the financial means to secure these partnerships“.
Müller says Bandai Namco must do everything possible to ensure that no other company takes a property it has invested in if it is acquired by a giant.
