The accounting degree and then the first steps as an itinerant banker in Banca Antoniana of Padua and Trieste
The DNA from absolute innovator in the savings industry Ennio Doris always had it. From the very beginning when just graduating in accounting, the young Doris entered the Banca Antoniana of Padua and Trieste, but instead of standing at the counter he started going door to door among the customers, most of whom were Venetian farmers and livestock brokers, who had difficulty going to the bank during office hours. He used to go to his customers to bring money or deliver checks and between one appointment and another he also met his wife, Lina Tombolato.
Perhaps in those years he refined his empathy with people, of any social rank. A key figure in Doris’ life was Gianfranco Cassol, schoolmate e pivot for the important choices of his life. While Doris wandered the countryside and built the life of a banker, Cassol pushed him to do more. So not just the entrepreneur Dino Marchiorello he proposed that he become the general manager of his mechanical workshops Talin, he accepted immediately changing work and rhythms. Years later he was again his friend Cassol and show him a new path, simply by saying that in the meantime he had become financial promoter and who worked on a commission basis.
Promoter work in Fideuram and Dival
“A magic word, commission: everything will depend on me”, Doris thought at that moment, as she recounted years later. So he threw himself body and soul into the new commitment, first in Fideuram and then in Dival. Within a few years he became responsible for half of the salesmen of the Dival. But something still pushed him: he wanted to find a way to create its own network for collecting household savings, even the humblest ones, often cut off from management services, reserved only for those who boasted substantial assets. But he didn’t have great resources.
In 1981 the meeting with Silvio Berlusconi
Luck was on his side when he read an interview with Silvio Berlusconi on Capital, where the Milanese entrepreneur he urged anyone with bright ideas to present them to him. And he was even more on his side when he really met Berlusconi, in the square in Portofino. It was 1981. Doris briefly talked about her secret dream, returning home with the promise of a date. When she saw Berlusconi again, Doris described her project in detail, but above all she told him that she would put all her savings accumulated up to that day and the result of her hard work on the business, in order to be an equal partner.
Italy program and the launch of Mediolanum
So in 1981 the company was founded Italy program, the first Italian network to offer asset management consultancy, owned equally by Doris and Berlusconi’s Fininvest. The company quickly grew, becoming Mediolanum in 1994. In 1996 it was listed on Piazza Affari and the following year it became a bank. A passage, the latter, by no means taken for granted given that Berlusconi should have reduce its presence in the capital (by law it was not possible to control companies and banks at the same time).
Moreover, in the meantime the Knight had entered politics. Thus was born the first Italian bank without branches, close to customers through the telephone, a model that at the time only worked in Great Britain. Later, following a trip to America, Doris realized that besides the phone it would be The Internet is the hub of your institution. Mediolanum Bank, since its birth, it has grown relentlessly. Today he only works in Italy for more 2,300 people and boasts assets managed and administered for over 104 billion euros. In the first nine months of 2021 it recorded 375.8 million euros of net profit.
At Piazza Affari, the Doris’s creature is now worth nearly 6.6 billion market capitalizationor.
