The Balearic government values the possibility of guaranteeing vegan menus in the Balearic schools, and studies that veganism is considered a valid reason for the adaptation of the children’s school menu.
Current regulations only consider making this modification for religious reasons or for medical and health reasons. But now the Ministry of Education opens to normalize vegan food -without products of animal origin -, following the case of a mother who managed to adapt the feeding of her vegan son in a public school in Palma.
This parent got her son to take the house prepared from home inside her own cold room. The Association of Parents of the College initially refused to provide an adapted menu because the regulations only collected this possibility for religious reasons. The complainant had complained that the child gave fish soup, although from the association of families of the school they assured that the student had not been forced to eat any food and that he was always informed of the animal origin of the products.
For a year the mother made several claims until she denounced the case publicly and managed to give her an alternative at school. Since this week, the child brings his own food to the dining room, committing to the most similar to the rest of the students. In the dining room they are responsible for conserving and heating the food of this vegan student.
The Ministry of Education ensures that it is a specific case, although it remembers that the health regulations allow to bring a liber if the center authorizes it. However, it is proposed to modify the current regulations on school canteens to be clearer.
The proposal on the table is that the adaptation of the menu for “cultural reasons” can be recognized, an aspect recognized so far exclusively for religious issues, and that would cover other interpretations such as veganism, a food without products of animal origin.
Veganism, which excludes meat and any product of animal origin from its diet, such as milk, eggs, honey, cheese and butter, base its diet on a way of living dedicated to animal welfare.
The animalist collective Satya Animal celebrates this “animalist collective success” and advocates the inclusion of veganism as a cultural motive in school food. From the animalist collective they consider “crucial” to put veganism, “at least, at the same level as a religious issue,” because “both food decisions are given by voluntary motivations derived from free thought and personal beliefs.”
In addition, they claim “scientific evidence” as well as the fact that “organisms such as WHO recognize this type of diet as balanced and healthy.”
Diversity of life styles
Satya Animal argues that veganism “not only benefits children who do not eat animal products for ethical reasons, but also promotes an inclusive school environment that respects the diversity of convictions and lifestyles”, since “the inclusion of veganism in The school environment reflects a change in social perception towards plant -based food, which is increasingly valued by its positive impact on animals, health and the environment ».
Similarly, the entity warns that “veganism is not a passing fad, but a growing movement that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of an ethical and sustainable diet.”
Finally, Satya Animal calls institutions to continue with this proposal and work to implement vegan options in all educational centers, transforming food into “a space of respect and diversity.”
