Baldwin, the gun the actor fired was used by the off-set crew with live bullets for fun. Indiscretions on the assistant under investigation
After the news leaked yesterday of at least one other (previous) accident with weapons on the set of the western film Rust, with Alec Baldwin, which had involved the actor’s stunt double, found himself firing real shots, fortunately without hitting anyone, new updates arrive to shed light on the tragic accident.
The prop gun that killed her director of photography Halyna Hutchins and caused the director’s injury Joel Souza it had been used by some members of the crew off the set, for fun, with real bullets. According to Tmz this could explain the real bullet in Baldwin’s prop pistol.
The weapon appears to have been used by staff members outside the set to train a target shooting. Also, according to a source cited by the site, policemen found real and blank bullets in the same area, another explanation of how a real bullet could have ended up in the gun.
It is learned, news yet to be confirmed, that the assistant director would be investigated David Halls, who handed the weapon to Baldwin declaring it safe and loaded with blanks. Meanwhile, Baldwin risks consequences as a producer for the accidental killing of director of photography Halina Hutchins.

According to some legal experts cited by the American media, he is unlikely to be charged with manslaughter as he did not know the gun was loaded. The only possibility that he will be criminally indicted is if it is established that he handled the weapon in a dangerous way, something that has not yet emerged. As one of the film’s producers, however, he risks a series of lawsuits if negligence in safety is ascertained.

The three people who spoke with the Los Angeles Times explain that when such an incident occurs on a set (such as the one that occurred in mid-October always on the set of Rust), an internal investigation is opened and a meeting of all the workers of the set is organized, to shed light on shortcomings and errors . This was not done by the Baldwin film team, however.
The ongoing investigation would also focus on the 24-year-old in charge of checking and preparing the weapons to be used on the set, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, daughter of Thell Reed, a well-known Hollywood gunsmith.
