Microsoft is also making great progress regarding the gaming on ARM platformas emerged during a recent demonstration that showed, among others, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Borderlands run on the new Copilot+ PCs with convincing results.
We remind you that the Copilot+ PCs, presented these days by Microsoft, are a line of ARM-based products that use the Qualcomm Snapdragon very interesting results.
Some specific optimizations implemented by the system allow a notable increase in resolution and performance, thanks also to the use of integrated systems such as “Auto SR” by Microsoft, which is a Automatic Super Resolution.
Possible future developments
At Build 2024, Microsoft demonstrated for example the functioning of Baldur’s Gate 3, which ran at approximately 30 fps on Surface Pro 11which represents a good start if we consider how Windows on ARM is a bit at the beginning of a real relaunch of the platform, which has so far been rather uncertain in terms of performance.
Borderlands was also shown on a Qualcomm Snapdragon devkit with encouraging results, which if nothing else demonstrate a possible interesting prospect for gaming on the ARM platform, as far as Windows is concerned.
Microsoft reported that Auto SR is capable of increase the frame rate up to 60%, taking advantage of the NPU present on Copilot+ PCs and specifically designed for operations related to artificial intelligence.
According to the slides shown at the event, there are already over 1000 games in the testing phase, with the aim of making them playable at least at 1080p and 30 fps on these new platforms, but this is indeed a start. What emerges from all this, however, is the assumption about a possible future console ARM-based Xboxwhich at this point could also be portable, but these are just rumors at the moment.
