A few skirmishes and then the magnificent three – Bagnaia, Martin and Marquez started to put on a show in the Sprint. Those who, with a hint of contempt, call the 2024 world championship a Ducati single-brand championship should instead thank the Borgo Panigale company for having put on the track so many bikes with more or less similar performance between the official ones and those of the satellite teams.
This is the secret of hyper-spectacular races, even in super restricted versions like the Sprints. So to the delight of the spectators, with seven laps to go Marquez attacks and passes Martin, snatching second place from him and launching himself in pursuit of Bagnaia. The show begins. Ruined by the fact that shortly afterwards at San Donato – with 4 laps to go – Martin slips and opens the doors of the podium to the extraordinary debutant (just 20 years old) Acosta. The wild Marquez tries to get close to Pecco, he succeeds, but the micro race doesn’t allow them to get to the final duel. Too bad about the show.
Bagnaia thus confirms himself to be the rider to beat at Mugello and enjoys the embrace of the public: “It gets me crazy racing at Mugello – he said yesterday – and when I entered the garage there were already people shouting my name, it was goosebumps. The Mugello public is an added value that helps. I’m satisfied because we worked in the right way.”
A perfect analysis, confirmed by Sprint which this time does not bring him the usual bad luck of the last three times. This is Pecco’s first victory in a micro-race in almost a year, as the last one was in Austria on August 19 last year. Not only that, given that Martin scores the first zero in his beloved Sprints (so far he has won 12 and had never qualified lower than eighth place), perhaps now – the spell has been broken – Pecco is starting to like Sprints…
