What’s wrong with Annalena Baerbock’s election campaign? The first theses are circulating among the Greens in the Bundestag – but accusations against an external “group” are also being voiced.
Berlin – started full of hope – and already stranded a long way away from the Chancellery at the beginning of July? The Bundestag election campaign of the Greens has stalled mightily: The latest polls see a lead of the Union in the double-digit range. And the party’s well-planned plans – focus on content and civilized tone – can be seen less and less. Now the Green Party campaigners could go to a retreat with them. The first theses on the causes of the misery are already circulating. Baerbock’s own team comes into focus – and a mysterious external “group”.
Baerbock in the crossfire: “Maneuver criticism” could follow – internal doubts about the team of the chancellor candidate?
There is plenty of reason for a thorough reappraisal: For days, the Green election program has not been debated, but a copy-paste affair of her Chancellor candidate Baerbock – which was flopped around Christmas bonuses and résumé cosmetics that were not declared in the Bundestag. Meanwhile, the nerves are apparently increasingly bare. The party reacted rather thinly to allegations of copyright infringement with “character assassination” allegations. While (internally) in Saarland and (externally) in North Rhine-Westphalia the tatters fly violently and often in a less edifying tone.
Baerbock is now going on vacation – time for the family has been planned for a long time, said the Greens. The search for the cause is still going on. When asked how several mistakes could have happened in the Chancellor candidate’s election campaign in the past few weeks, Party Managing Director Michael Kellner said on Friday: “We do maneuver criticism internally. I would not do that through the ‘Morgenmagazin’ now.”
It seems possible, however, that Baerbock’s own team will come into focus. It was “not the structures within the party headquarters” responsible for the problems, “but the disregard for these structures” by Baerbock’s staff, quoted the world an internal party critic. According to the report, these confidants include husband Daniel Holefleisch, but also campaign spokesman Andreas Kappler and Cem Özdemir’s former office manager Michael Scharfschwert. The Green Party headquarters had already referred to Baerbock’s office with the scandal over Christmas bonus and resume.
Greens: Allegations against Baerbock “exaggerated”? Even competition annoyed – “it’s about the future of this country”
It should be little controversial that the allegations about Petitessen occupy a rather disproportionately large space in the election campaign – especially since the competitors Armin Laschet (keyword: Würfel affair) and Olaf Scholz (keywords: Wirecard and Cum-Ex) personally not entirely without defects and blame are.
Even the competition jumped in Baerbock in the plagiarism debate. On Friday, the head of the Left, Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, once again emphasized her disconcertment. “Whether a candidate for chancellor needs a book, I don’t know, but that we only talk about it, I find really worrying,” said Hennig-Wellsow on Friday mirror. “It’s not about footnotes in books, it’s about the future of this country.” Co-boss Janine Wissler said Merkur.de With a view to the ongoing debate about Baerbock and the difficult standing of women in politics: “Every slip of the tongue is interpreted as incompetence.”
Waiter made a similar statement on Friday. Criticism is completely legitimate, he emphasized, “only we can see that even small things are being exaggerated”. When the allegation of copyright infringement arose, the party wanted to put a stop sign.
According to world This thesis of fluffy little things is also widely represented in the Green parliamentary group. However, there is also another camp – which also wants to recognize a campaign against Baerbock and the Greens, but also points out that it is important to avoid personal errors and inaccuracies before the federal election. There is also some talk of “excessive demands on the federal office”.
Annalena Baerbock: Plagiarism allegations are growing ever more dazzling – did a “group” want to install Habeck?
Meanwhile, the plagiarism finds in Baerbock’s book “Jetzt. As we renew our land ”to bloom ever more dazzling. According to a report by the plagiarism hunter Stefan Weber picture Meanwhile also discovered passages from a guest contribution of a party friend Baerbock – from a text by Jürgen Trittin for the Frankfurter Rundschau. “I’ve never seen such audacity and stupidity in 14 years of activity,” Weber said in a tweet.
A colleague of Weber fired in a conversation with the portal t-online.de however, there are also speculations that it could be a targeted campaign against Baerbock. “VroniPlag” founder Martin Heidingsfelder reported that he was contacted by a “group from the right-wing camp” to find out about Baerbock’s curriculum vitae, once in May; then again on Wednesday. It was about people “who can start campaigns”.
The goal was to bring Robert Habeck into the race as a candidate for chancellor instead of Baerbock. Heidingsfelder refused according to his own statements – and also judged harshly about the ongoing plagiarism search: The procedure has “features of the American election campaign and the participation is unworthy of a plagiarism hunter in my eyes”. Meanwhile, Weber confirmed that he had no clients and was not paid for this plagiarism search.
Baerbock wants to “smile”: Own goal under time pressure?
Baerbock himself remains calm for the time being – and does not even think about clearing the field for Habeck. “Smile or show your teeth?” Asked a journalist from Brigitte magazine in an interview on Thursday in a Berlin cinema. The Greens boss replied without hesitation: “Smile.” There is no doubt that the Greens themselves supplied their opponents with ammunition. A possible explanation for the plagiarism problem can be found in her book. There Baerbock thanked her editor, “especially since everything suddenly had to go very quickly with the decision to run for chancellor in April”.
In any case, before her vacation, Baerbock tried again to get some substantive input for the election campaign. In an interview with the Funke media group, she suggested a “large federal climate adjustment fund”, “through which those who have lost their belongings due to weather-related disasters are compensated”. Many people are not insured against it. That, at least, is undoubtedly a bigger problem than stealing wording from party colleagues. (fn with material from dpa and AFP)
