Foreign Minister Baerbock travels to the crisis-ridden state of Niger, but not only assures support there. She also dares to try it on herself – and gets laughs.
Niamey – Many are surprised by Annalena Baerbock. After the federal election campaign, you probably didn’t have much credit for the Greens politician. But as Foreign Minister, she is currently cutting a good figure in the eyes of many observers and colleagues. Even before the outbreak of the Ukraine war, she had a lot to do in this office. According to polls, Baerbock is currently one of the most popular German politicians. After her trip to the West African crisis state of Niger, even the CDU member of the Bundestag Tilman Kuban is impressed.
“Baerbock shapes new style in the Foreign Office”: CDU politician praises Foreign Minister
“One has to acknowledge without envy that Annalena Baerbock is currently creating a new style in the Federal Foreign Office. Really good!” he wrote on Twitter Thursday afternoon (April 14). He shared a video by dpa federal correspondent Jörg Blank. In it, Baerbock can be seen in the middle of a crowd of people, trying to emulate the burdens that women have to carry there.
“Two buckets of melons, a wooden pole, blazing heat,” wrote the dpa reporter. Baerbock had the bar on her shoulders, apparently asking again how to grip correctly, and then running a few steps forward. But she didn’t get very far before she started laughing. In any case, it didn’t seem easy – according to a report, her action was well received by the women of Ouallam.
Baerbock traveling: “Suffering, Hunger and Expulsion”
Other videos show Baerbock on her trip chatting with another woman at a market and talking to children. The German Foreign Minister assured the country and the region of further support in the fight against the hunger crisis and terrorism. “Terrorism, the climate and food crises – these are all global crises that are dramatically bundling here on site,” said the Green politician on Thursday after meeting her Nigerien colleague Hassoumi Massoudou in the capital Niamey . In concrete terms, the climate crisis means “suffering, hunger and displacement” in the Sahel region.
38 million people would go hungry in West Africa in the next few months – three times as many as three years ago, said Baerbock. “We see what’s in store for you and therefore what’s in store for us as a world.” The minister assured: “We won’t leave you alone with this.” The traffic light government recently initiated an additional 50 million euros for humanitarian aid for the Sahel region and another 50 million euros for development cooperation. Neither the climate nor the food crisis nor terror stopped at borders. It is all the more important not only to look at individual countries in isolation, but to look at the entire region. (cibo/dpa)
