Berlin / Liverpool – Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock wants to make the fight against the climate crisis one of the priorities of the German chairmanship of the group of leading western economies (G7). “We can indulge in the illusion that the West is an island, but even on this the water will continue to rise inexorably if we do not act now,” said the Green politician on Friday before her trip to the meeting of the G7 foreign ministers on Weekend in Liverpool. “That is why we will also make dealing with the climate crisis one of the priorities of our G7 presidency next year.”
In the coming year, after seven years, Germany will take over as chairmanship of the G7 – this also includes France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Canada and the USA.
In Liverpool, too, one will have to talk about the climate crisis and what impact it will have on peace and security, said Baerbock. This applies to the emerging and developing countries particularly affected, but also directly to Europe. The Russian military movements in the border area with Ukraine and the relationship with China are also to be discussed.
On Friday evening, Baerbock only returned briefly to Berlin from a first series of inaugural visits to Paris, Brussels and Warsaw and flew directly to Liverpool. The link between the trips to the G7 meeting and on Monday to the EU Foreign Council in Brussels was coincidental in terms of time, but there was a strong connection in terms of content. “Many of our closest international partners and friends are gathered in the EU and G7.” Germany shares common values with them – democracy, human rights and the commitment to an international order based on rules and not on the law of the mightiest.
