MAK: Mi-8 helicopter crashed in Kamchatka on August 31 due to weather and commander error
The Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) has compiled an interim report on the causes of the crash of the Mi-8 Vityaz-Aero helicopter in Kamchatka on August 31. Details of the document were revealed by the TASS agency.
MAK allowed the Mi-8 to crash for two reasons
According to the IAC report, the cause of the Mi-8 crash was bad weather in the mountains and the crew’s unpreparedness to fly in these conditions. The document contains facts that at the time of the accident there was low cloudiness. A screenshot from a CCTV camera at Yelizovo airport, 30 kilometers from where a helicopter crashed in the mountains, shows that the mountains were completely covered with fog.
Haze, low stratus clouds and fog were observed
In addition, the Mi-8 commander did not have access to instrument flights. It is also known that recently all accidents with Vityaz-Aero helicopters occurred due to difficult weather conditions.
The headquarters for eliminating the consequences of the disaster previously stated that the helicopter crash could have been caused by a piloting error in foggy conditions. “In the fog, the pilot could not notice the hill and hit its slope,” the experts said.
Experts will continue to investigate what happened
The IAC called for training with pilots on analyzing weather conditions and decision-making procedures, as well as on actions to take when encountering weather conditions for which the crew is not prepared. According to experts, the crew needs to know how to recover the aircraft from an unusual instrument attitude.
The information presented in the interim report (preliminary certificate) is preliminary and can be clarified and supplemented based on research results
The investigation into the crash continues. The IAC will generate a final report with all the conclusions.
Earlier, the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, Dmitry Yadrov, spoke about the condition of the flight recorders of the crashed Mi-8 helicopter. He called their condition satisfactory. Previously, it was reported that the Federal Air Transport Agency was checking the Vityaz-Aero company, which owned the crashed Mi-8.
Everyone on board died
On August 31, a Mi-8 helicopter, heading to the village of Nikolaevka, Elizovsky district, crashed in Kamchatka. The Eastern Interregional Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia named a technical malfunction and violation of piloting rules as the two main reasons for the crash.
Before this, TASS reported that the missing Mi-8 crashed into a hill before the crash. The wreckage of the vehicle was found near the Vachkazhets volcano mountain range.
