The bad boys are back on track. Under the aegis of Columbia Pictures and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return to Bad Boys: Ride or Diea film that puts the franchise back on the right path, rediscovering the winning formula lost with the previous chapter Bad Boys for Life. Let’s go back to the streets of Miami: Mike and Marcus are waiting for us in a flaming Porche!
On the streets of Miami
Imagine a scorching sunny day in Miami, a shiny Porsche speeding through the streets driven by Mike with thelifelong friendthe brave Marcus. The latter is struggling with a strict diet which he tries in every way to avoid: food, as we know, is his passion. Everything changes when right in the middle of the party that our favorites have reached, Marcus has a heart attackand in the middle of a dream journey, he meets the Police Captain Howard, died in the previous chapter of the saga.
When Marcus wakes up, the situation has changed: the man feels like a moral awakening, and a new youth, while the group learns how corruption has spread in the police, even to politics. L’Bad Boys’ goal is that of find out who is behind it all this, and defeat the gang that made the badge look bad.
The wise one directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah he can give new lifeblood to the film, bringing the series to its former glory. We see what seems like a sort of remake of the second chapter, with different assumptions and new technologies, but in reality a blast from the past that hits the mark.
What are you gonna do?
Despite the years, the vicissitudes and the objective abdominal fat gained by the two protagonists, thesoul of the action it is intrinsic in their movements, in the scenes they play, and in the perfect harmony between irony and fun that the couple manages to bring to the screen. The direction does a lot of the actionmixing techniques known for some time in the world of cinema (without disdaining to mention some typical shots of the saga) and new elements such as drones and the latest generation bodycams which allow you to move from a subjective perspective to the third person, seamlessly.
Undoubtedly there is the influence of John Wick and the action that the saga with Keanu Reeves brought to the screen: Bad Boys Ride or Die it is, in no uncertain terms, a summary of what action cinema has given in the last five or seven years, while bringing within it a non-trivial plotinteresting topics such as waking up from a coma, panic attacks and the sense of parental responsibility which involves, for the first time, Mike (Will Smith) personally.

New “recruits” and old friends also appear in the saga who return, this time with more marked roles, such as Reggie, the husband of Marcus’ daughter, who has become a solid marine and capable of actively protecting the family in case of need. They can also be seen Judy and daughter, wife and daughter respectively of the late police captain Howard, which at this juncture will play an important role in the plot. Last but not least, there is Armando, Mike’s sonan antagonist character in the previous film and today looking for redemption.
When the come for you!
Bad Boys: Ride or Die lives up to its name quite literally: the film is a pleasant turn of events, a real “ride” in a sports car hurtling through the streets of Miami without brakes, although the chases are not prominent in the film. It is a film that differs from the banality and cacophony of the previous chapter, where Mike was the only protagonist and Marcus a speck, almost a comic sidekick and that’s it.
L’alchemy between Smith and Lawrence it is crazy: the two really seem like lifelong companions in arms, and if the first is more serious than usual, the second mixes intelligent jokes, capable of eliciting sincere laughter, to moments of pure policeman seriousness that never hurts. The film is for the whole family, but also winks at those who love action and intricate plots, with that little touch of the 80s which neither tastes nor dominates the entire production.
The film almost two hours of footage manages to entertain, without ever losing focus, and above all without appearing soporific to the viewer. Could they have done better? Yes, there was probably room for something more, but technically it wasn’t needed: the Bad Boys needed to return to the limelight, make themselves known to young audiences and wink at those who know the saga inside out. Mission successful, without a doubt.
