Mexico City- Marty McFly and the scientist Emmett L. Brown, “Doc”, shot it in 1985, 1955 and 1885. Now, the mythical DeLorean “goes back to the future” in 2022, although it will have to wait until 2024 to circulate again.
The North American firm DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) presents its new model on May 31, which represents the resurgence of the brand under a totally electric approach.
But complete images of the new DeLorean called Alpha5 have already been leaked, after several teasers published by the company since the beginning of April.
The Alpha5, whose production will start in 2024 and will be limited to just 88 units, is a fully electric coupe with some references to the legendary DMC-12, made popular in the 1980s by the science fiction saga “Back to the Future”.
Among the iconic features of the DeLorean, the gullwing doors remain. However, the Alpha5 moves away from the original design to join the new trends in electric sports cars.
Italdesign Giugiaro, an automotive design and engineering studio from Turin, Italy, worked with DMC to develop the new DeLorean, which measures 4.99 meters long, 2.04 meters wide and 1.37 meters high (with the doors closed), average larger than those of the DMC-12 that Hollywood made a star of.
The CEO of the DeLorean Motor Company and spearheading development of the Alpha5 is Joost de Vries, a former Tesla employee.
This 21st Century DeLorean seats four occupants and its interior is essentially digital, with a couple of multimedia screens, no buttons and few physical controls.
The successor to the DMC-12 will have a 100 kilowatt-hour (kWh) capacity battery -similar to that of the Tesla Model S-, which will give it an estimated autonomy of 483 kilometers under the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standard, used in USA.
Its maximum speed will be 241 kilometers per hour (km/h) and it promises to go from 0 to 96 km/h in 3.4 seconds, while it would take to reach 142 km/h in about 4.3 seconds. Mind you, it doesn’t have a “flux capacitor” like the car in “Back to the Future.”
Following the unveiling on May 31, DMC will showcase the Alpha5 and provide more details on it on August 18 at the Pebble Beach Concourse of Elegance in Monterey County, California.
The Alpha5 is the first car of the “New DeLorean”, as the company plans to launch more models, between electric and hybrid, including a sports coupe with a V8 engine and even a sedan or an SUV with hydrogen mechanics.
