Yes, our ancestors were residents of Faizabad. However, I am born in Lucknow. Graduation was also done from Lucknow, but if life and work went on in Delhi, then I can say that I belong to Delhi. Currently, I am Dean in the Department of Architecture of Jamia Millia Islamia Central University.
Tell us about the map of the new Babri Masjid being built.
See, it is up to you whether or not to use the word Babri with this mosque. The Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation is working on the five acres of land it has got in Dhanipur. He told us that you should build a complex on it which will be a center of human service. Three of its components have been thought up, and may increase later. The first is a mosque, the second is a hospital. Right now people run from Faizabad to Gorakhpur-Lucknow for treatment. There will also be an archive, which will have a library, precious documents, objects and auditorium etc.
Ayodhya mosque will be free from the influence of ‘Babri ki Thape’
The mosque was to be built, how did the idea of a hospital and archive come about?
The mission of this entire exercise is Khidmat-e-Khalk, that is, human service. This philosophy derives from Islam itself. Today in terms of Khidmat-e-Khalk, man needs health and education. Creating an archive for education, which will be a school in itself. It is not like a traditional school that there will be high school-inter or graduation. Here you will learn about India’s cultural history and India’s national strength and be proud of it. There will also be lectures of respected people. In a way, it would be like self-schooling. This is to increase people’s Intellect Level.
Is the land sufficient for the hospital that is being built or is it needed?
Right now the government has given us the land we are working on, not questioning its space. If more is needed, then it will be seen.
Will the design follow the same or will the new structure be built?
It will be a brand new structure and will be contemporary.
Why contemporary design instead of medieval design?
Architecture itself is very dynamic subject. Today it is wrong to repeat the medieval design. Architecture is in tune with today’s times. It is unwise to attempt to repeat it. The challenges of the Middle Ages were different and those of today are different. Today’s issue is Energy. Like the contemporary mosque built in Karnataka, it fulfills all its energy needs from Surya. We wear clothes according to today, buy cars according to today, so why any old thing in it? Then Islam is also a very dynamic religion.
Where do we find contemporary mosques?
You will find such mosques all over Europe, will be found in the Middle East and will also be found in India. There are many new design mosques built in Qatar and Dubai. Contemporary mosques are also built in Denmark and Germany.
Will it be named Babri Masjid or something?
The name belongs to the foundation itself. It will become the Indo-Islamic Cultural Center. Actually, there is no way to name mosques. When the media called him Babri, he got his name. Otherwise it is either a mosque, or a Jama Masjid. The mosque is not in the name of anyone. The mosque itself is known from its place.
When will the map be ready?
Work is going on, but due to Corona, everybody is doing it from their own places, the team is unable to sit together. Due to this, it is taking some time, yet the map should be ready in two to three months.
