BRASILIA (Reuters) – The president of Covid’s CPI in the Senate, Omar Aziz (PSD-AM), assured this Monday that there is no split in the majority group of the commission, the so-called G7, but warned that only “pyrotechnics” is not capable of condemning those responsible for the mismanagement of the pandemic in the country.
The group went through a malaise after the leaking of excerpts from the report by senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) before it could be discussed internally. There are differences over points in the text, such as the government’s typification of the crime of genocide against indigenous peoples, but Aziz argued that nothing that has already been disclosed should be removed from the text, under penalty of casting suspicion on the work of the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission ( CPI).
“There is no split, the goal is the same,” Aziz told reporters. “There is a divergence in the referral, and I have the right not to like it.”
Aziz denied that the crisis in the G7 was caused by the intention to withdraw any point from the opinion. He did, however, express concern about some of the typifications provided for in the opinion “to fall” due to a fragile complaint.
“It’s no use accusing you of 10 things. I need to accuse you of something well done and you will be condemned in the same way”, he argued.
The senator guaranteed, however, that none of the members of the majority group will vote against the opinion of Renan Calheiros. “Who will vote against? I don’t think anyone votes against Senator Renan’s report,” he said.
“Now, no one is condemned when you carry them only in ink, ok? People are convicted in court when you have overwhelming evidence against them… You can do pyrotechnics. But then he sat there, with the sobriety of the judge, analyzing evidence by evidence, I hope that we don’t have any kind of setback in this”, said Aziz.
Last week, Renan said in interviews that his report will call for the indictment of Bolsonaro for 11 alleged crimes.
According to the president of the CPI, the top committee had agreed to meet this Monday in Renan’s office so that he could make a presentation of his opinion. Aziz did not hide the discomfort of, even on Friday night, knowing parts of the text by the press.
Precisely for this reason, the senator canceled the meeting this Monday and was categorical in saying that he is only interested in knowing the content of the report on Wednesday, when it will be officially presented to the CPI at a meeting called for its reading.
Asked if he didn’t want to have access to the document before Wednesday, Aziz replied that “zero”.
“We are concerned about knowing when no one knows,” he said.
Aziz denied that the personal discomfort with Renan will hinder the conclusion of the CPI.
“This cannot affect the work we’ve done so far,” he said.
Earlier, Renan considered it natural for there to be disagreements in the group that heads the investigation, said he was willing to talk and said that the opinion to be presented will not only reflect his position or that of any other senator, but that of the majority of the commission.
For the rapporteur, these differences are “superficial” and easily remedied”.
