Netflix's live action series Avatar The Legend of Aang will change one of the aspects of Sokka: his sexism. The information comes from an interview between Entertainment Weekly and the actor who plays the character, Ian Ousley.
“Certain things have more effect when you increase the realism,” Ousley said, which prompted Kiawentiio (Katara) to reveal: “I feel like we've also eliminated Sokka's sexism. I feel like in the original series there were a lot of moments not very pleasant”.
“Yes, absolutely,” agrees Ousley. “There are things that were redirected just because they might have sounded a little different [nel live action]”.
The Potential Problem of Avatar: The Legend of Aang
A potential problem behind the choice of the authors of the live action of Avatar The legend of Aang is that by eliminating Sokka's sexism the power of his narrative arc is diminished. The character is absolutely sexist, but over the course of the seasons he learns to respect women, especially when they are more skilled than him, thus overcoming his belief that men are innately better at fighting. Sokka learns to work alongside his sister, Toph and the Kyoshi Warriors. It will be necessary to understand if the character has been modified to take the issue into account or if he will simply be more respectful from the beginning without then evolving in a particular way.
The choice though It makes sense considering the type of product. In a cartoon it is easy to ridicule Sokka for his sexism, in a live-action – as he is a real actor to say certain things – he can be much more strange and leave an unpleasant message across.
We will have to judge when we can see the character in the series. It also won't be the only change as Avatar: The Legend of Aang will immediately give more space to Azula.
