“Avatar“, directed by james cameron, arrived in 2009 determined to revolutionize cinema. It became the highest grossing film in history, won three Oscars and was the talk of the world. It only needed to be recognized as a national heritage, but it did not need to leave its mark.
After 13 years, the film returns thanks to Cinemark and fans are wondering: Is it worth seeing it in full 2022? The ‘King Midas of Hollywood’ claims that if you haven’t seen the movie in theaters then you haven’t really seen it because it was meant to be enjoyed on a big screen and it’s the only authentic way to see it.
Axel Kuschevatzky points out that movie theaters do not have comparable competition, referring to streaming or home versions. At the time “Avatar” more than demonstrated it with its prodigious display of 3D. If you have not seen it before, it is still capable of providing a rewarding audiovisual spectacle. Otherwise, we do not see a greater contribution than the remastered.
Since its relentless marketing campaign it has boasted of its visual effects. However, its plot has always been beaten for being flat, one pile of clichés on top of another and a rehash of “Pocahontas”. The resemblance is so obvious that there is no way to generate an interesting discussion about it.
“Avatar” claims to be the highest grossing film in history, but it has also been branded as the most overrated. Defenders and critics will never be lacking. In any case, this is everyone’s chance to have their own verdict.
What do critics say about the film?
On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 91% approval rating from critics and 82% from audiences.
It may be more impressive technically than as a narrative piece, but it reaffirms James Cameron’s unique gift for imaginative and absorbing filmmaking.
What is it about?
On a lush planet called Pandora live the Na’vi, beings that appear to be primitive but are actually highly evolved. Jake Sully, a paralyzed former Marine transforms through an Avatar, learns about the world of these beings and falls in love with a Na’vi woman.
