Avalanche accident in Italy: two tourists die
According to the report, the two victims are a 51-year-old Italian and a 33-year-old woman from Lithuania. The hotel where the two were staying had sounded the alarm on Saturday night when the two had not returned. However, due to the onset of darkness, the rescue operation could only begin on Sunday morning.
The current weather conditions were probably also fatal to the two. According to the report, these had led to a very wet and heavy snowpack at higher altitudes. Under these conditions, it is almost impossible to stay on the surface in an avalanche or survive in an air bubble.
Warning of avalanches in South Tyrol – mild outcome with further descent
Currently, avalanche warning level two out of five applies in South Tyrol – also because of the low snowfall. However, the old snow layer is obviously very dangerous and can lead to very wet and severe avalanches.
In another avalanche in Ahrntal, a 51-year-old woman was very lucky. She was able to survive an avalanche after being swept along almost 180 meters. She was only partially buried by snow and was able to call for help. The woman was rescued with minor injuries. (rjs)
