The end of summer welcomes the fall equinox
Autumn 2022 will officially begin in Spain on Friday, September 23 at 3:40 a.m. in peninsular time (02:04 in the Canary Islands). Last year the new season started a day earlier and in 2023 the date will coincide with the same day as this year. There are many who wonder what day autumn begins, since you never know exactly, sometimes it coincides with the same day and sometimes it doesn’t. This situation is due to the autumnal equinox.
Autumn equinox
The seasons are fixed for astronomical reasons, that is, they depend on the position of the Earth’s axis and its orbit with respect to the sun. The beginning of this new season is marked by the autumnal equinox, when the Earth is in a position where its two poles are the same distance from the sun. On that day the sun rises exactly at the east point and sets at the west point.
The autumn equinox can occur between September 21 and 24, since the orbital period is not exact. For this reason, each year arrives at a different time. The equinoxes are the two times of the year when day and night are of equal length. This phenomenon occurs when the sun is on the equator of the Earth. The equinox is that of spring, which occurred on March 21.
when does autumn end
Autumn 2022 will last 89 days and 21 hours. It will end on December 21 with the start of winter, according to calculations by the National Astronomical Observatory. The solstice is the moment in which the opposite situation to the equinox occurs, the moment of greatest difference in duration between day and night occurs. The summer solstice in 2022 was on June 21, a very special date because it is related to the night of San Juan, the longest of the year.
