Autonomous driving has been labeled by many as the future of mobility alongside electric. This is also why Autostrade per l'Italia is concretely supporting the testing of self-driving vehicles on its network, especially in the last phase just concluded which was carried out on a stretch open to traffic. Aspi itself wanted to clarify that all tests have been carried out in maximum safety, according to the requirements established by law.
Test on the highway
The start of this experimental phase was given last summer: the first road tests started in July A26 where the self-driving car he traveled 20 km, in a stretch where there were no tunnels. At the end of October, however, the experimentation continued for another 30 km, again on the A26, but this time also passing through the Valsesia gallery. Autostrade per l'Italia spoke about useful tests for “understand with what precision the vehicle locates itself along its route, detecting, for example, vertical and horizontal signs and GNSS satellite coverage”.
The experimentation continues
The protagonist of this experimentation is Movyon, center of excellence for research and innovation of the Autostrade per l'Italia Group and leader in Intelligent Transport Systems services. In this sense, the company plans to carry out further open traffic tests in the Valsesia tunnel in the first months of this year, to verify the reliability of the precision positioning of the car enabled by antennas distributed in the tunnel.
New step towards the future
“This experimentation projects us towards the future and revolutionizes the concept of road driving. Our Group is testing solutions that will allow self-driving vehicles to 'read' the events in advancethanks to the data transmitted by the infrastructure – commented the CEO of Aspi, Roberto Tomasi – This is another important step forward within the Mercury Programme, Aspi's plan dedicated to innovation. The goal is to ensure safer infrastructure, participating as protagonists in the mobility revolution in the name of decarbonisation, digitalisation and to guarantee increasingly innovative services that are close to the needs of users”.
