As of July 14, Europe has given the green light to autonomous driving
L’Europe opens officially the doors at the autonomous driving. From the next July 14 the article will come into force 34-bis of the Vienna Convention on the movement of vehicles that will introduce the concept of ‘automatic driving system’. This eliminates obstacles to assistance systems that allow the driver of let go of the steering wheelat least under certain conditions (starting with level 3 Adas).
For many insiders, however, the regulations and government supervision are not decisive. It’s the same Convention to establish that the automatic driving it will be able to exit from the current experimental or in any case limited state only if implemented by national laws.
The fact that the article 34-bis has also been signed by the EU only allows immediate application in theory. The usability of the Adas of level 3ready for marketing and capable of driving – on dual carriageways when the speed does not exceed 60 km / h – requiring the driver only to regain control if they raise an alarm. The details of the levels 4 and 5, the latter it is equivalent to fully autonomous driving.
The situation in Italy
In the Infrastructure decree 68/2022 there is no reference to autonomous driving and any revisions of the Traffic Laws. We will see if the political orientation will change in the coming days, but the impression is that the discussion is still open both in our country and in the others of the European Union.
