Semiconductor shortages continue to affect the automotive industry around the world. First in a more timid way, now in an open way, manufacturers are starting to find solutions to circumvent the problem, temporarily eliminating features and financially compensating customers.
The shortage of semiconductors remains a problem, so much so that Ford has decided to work around it with a new strategy. The company will sell, outside Brazil, Ford Explorers vehicles without some features that depend on missing semiconductors.

The difference will also be noticed in the price, since these vehicles will be sold at a discount, although customers will have the option of later taking the vehicles to the workshop to integrate the missing chips.
The semiconductors will be shipped to dealers within a year and they will install them in vehicles, according to information released by Automotive News. The chips in question integrate the vehicles’ rear air conditioning and climate control system. In a statement to The Verge, a company spokesperson explained that both features can still be controlled from the front seats of the vehicle.
The change is temporary and a way to speed up vehicle delivery times. It will also be a way, as highlighted by the website that revealed the news firsthand, to help the manufacturer free the factories of partially built vehicles, which it cannot sell due to the lack of chips that equip some features.
Ford had already been forced to make a similar decision to respond to the demand for the F-150 pickup, which has already started production after the scheduled deadline because of the lack of chips. In this model, the company went ahead with a version without an automatic start-stop system, compensating customers who accepted the option with a credit of 50 dollars.
Ford’s decision is not exclusive. Other manufacturers have been forced to take similar measures. Tesla, in November of last year, had already started delivering models 3 and Y units without USB ports, later informing users that these components would be integrated later. The decision in this case ended up generating some controversy, because customers were not informed of the failure before purchasing the vehicles.
Volkswagen also confirmed at the end of last year that it would start selling some models without a touchscreen display and GM stopped using a fuel management module that allowed greater efficiency in some pickup models and stopped integrating wireless chargers in other models. .
In the case of Volkswagen, the decision affects models in the Series 3, X5, X6 and X7. Models in these conditions are sold with a credit of 500 dollars and with an authorization signed by the customer, which confirms that he is aware of the change.
The Covid-19 pandemic has been responsible for an unprecedented crisis in the semiconductor industry. The industry expected a gradual return to normality between the end of this year and the beginning of the next, but the war in Ukraine could make the situation even worse.
